publish date: 2017-06-01
For Gay Pride Month, asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write 'love letters' to the LGBTQ community. Below, Latin Grammy-winning artist Carla Morrison -- whose "Eres tu" music video features her as a wedding planner for a gay couple -- shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
When one of my friends told me that my music video for 'Eres tu' could take a route of celebrating a gay wedding, I was thrilled and excited to talk about a subject many of my friends and family struggled and are afraid to talk about. I remember that when the video came out, many people were saying awful things but many, many more were very thankful and happy I was bringing it to the conversation with my not only Mexican following but anyone who follows my music. I've always seen love as love and never needed to have anyone explain to me the way they feel towards anything or anyone. At the end, we are all humans and it is part of the greatness in life.
This music video taught me that many of us still are not too ready or familiar with the LGBTQ community and how sometimes fear is the only thing that keeps us divided. One great thing was that my mother told me one day, "You know what Mijita? Every time I would see LGBTQ community portrayed on the television or news, it always felt like it was told in a dirty and bad way and it made me feel confused about it ... but ever since your music video, I've learned that everyone is equal and that everyone has the right to love and it's not all about sexuality and what meets the eye but that they are normal people like me who have supportive families and accept them just how they are. That they are normal and have all the right to feel and live their lives to the fullest and be happy. I've learned to respect them and love them in a whole different way, just like any other person and for that I thank you."
In that moment I knew that using my voice for the voiceless meant a lot more than just making music, it meant making a change and being part of it. I love all of my LGBTQ fans!
